great thought #23

What does it mean for a Christian to be redeemed?

The dictionary says that redemption is the act of recovering ownership by paying a specified sum, releasing from bondage or captivity.

John Murray, in his classic work Redemption Accomplished and Applied, reminds us that, as believers, our redemption is complete and was accomplished by the finished work of Jesus on the Cross.  He writes:  “The language of redemption is the language of purchase and more specifically of ransom.  And ransom is the securing of a release by the payment of a price.  Redemption applies to every respect in which we are bound, and it releases us unto a liberty that is nothing less than the liberty of the glory of the children of God.”

“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding.”  Ephesians 1:7-8
